Research in your AI conversation
Legal source checks for in-house work
TheLawyer supports in-house researchers who already discuss business questions in an AI assistant. Connect source retrieval to that conversation, state the operational facts and ask for a research note that makes assumptions and missing evidence visible.

Translate the business question into research
Describe the activity, relevant countries and decision date before asking for a conclusion. Have the assistant separate the factual questions from the legal research questions. This creates a more useful brief than asking whether a whole product or business process is simply compliant.
Keep the evidence beside the recommendation
Request a concise issue list with a source passage for each material point. Ask what the source establishes, which business facts are assumed and what still needs specialist advice. The assistant can help draft an internal explanation, while the retrieved text gives the reviewer something concrete to inspect.
Escalate with a traceable record
Save the question, sources and unresolved issues through the research skill when write access is granted. Later reviewer feedback can be appended with attribution. Each researcher needs their own account; the personal-account model is not a shared firm licence or a team collaboration workspace.
A question to start with
Turn this business question into a research brief. Identify jurisdiction and factual gaps, retrieve the relevant original passages, and draft a short issue list showing what we know, what we assume and what counsel must decide.
An example prompt for your connected assistant. Your assistant decides which tools to call; review the result and the original sources.
Connect your assistantFrom question to checked sources
- 1
Define the issue
State the jurisdiction, relevant date and facts. Ask the assistant to identify missing information before drawing a conclusion.
- 2
Ask for the original text
Have the assistant search the indexed corpus, retrieve relevant passages and return source links. A missing result is a coverage gap to investigate.
- 3
Review and keep the trail
Open the original sources, check their dates and compare the wording with the answer. With write consent, the research skill can save the question, answer and later corrections.
Questions about this workflow
Can our whole legal team share one account?
No. TheLawyer accounts are personal. Use a separate account for each researcher. Connecting a personal account inside an approved company AI workspace does not turn it into a shared research licence.
Does TheLawyer cover every legal source?
No. Research is limited to the sources and versions in the indexed corpus. Ask your assistant to identify missing coverage and distinguish retrieved text from its own interpretation. Source links do not guarantee that an answer is correct.
What gets saved in my research history?
With write access and the research skill, questions, answers, citations and attributed corrections can be saved privately to your account. The host must actually send that content. A failed save should be reported. Your AI provider also has its own data policies.
