Research in your AI conversation

Legal research inside your AI chat

TheLawyer connects legal source research to a compatible AI assistant. You ask your question in the conversation you already use; the assistant retrieves source material through TheLawyer and works with it in that same conversation.

Keep the context of your question

A legal issue rarely arrives as one isolated sentence. Your conversation may already contain the facts, a draft and several follow-up questions. Connecting a research tool lets the assistant work from that context while requesting the source text it needs. You can continue refining the issue without copying each result into a separate research chat.

Separate evidence from interpretation

TheLawyer supplies search and retrieval tools. Your chosen assistant writes the explanation. Ask it to label direct quotations, identify the document and version, and explain which part of its conclusion depends on interpretation. This makes the boundary between retrieved evidence and model reasoning easier to inspect.

Choose a connector or the terminal

The remote MCP connector suits compatible AI chat clients. The CLI suits terminal work and agent workflows. Both use your personal account. The website handles installation, account settings and billing, while the research happens in your own tools. You still need any subscription required by your chosen AI provider.

A question to start with

Research this issue using TheLawyer. First ask for missing jurisdiction, date and facts. Retrieve the relevant original passages, link the sources, and separate the source text from your interpretation.

An example prompt for your connected assistant. Your assistant decides which tools to call; review the result and the original sources.

Connect your assistant

From question to checked sources

  1. 1

    Define the issue

State the jurisdiction, relevant date and facts. Ask the assistant to identify missing information before drawing a conclusion.

  2. 2

    Ask for the original text

Have the assistant search the indexed corpus, retrieve relevant passages and return source links. A missing result is a coverage gap to investigate.

  3. 3

    Review and keep the trail

Open the original sources, check their dates and compare the wording with the answer. With write consent, the research skill can save the question, answer and later corrections.

Questions about this workflow

How is this different from a separate legal chatbot?

TheLawyer adds legal research tools to your existing assistant. The conversation and explanation stay in that host. You use the website to connect and manage your account, rather than moving the research into a second chat application.

Does TheLawyer cover every legal source?

No. Research is limited to the sources and versions in the indexed corpus. Ask your assistant to identify missing coverage and distinguish retrieved text from its own interpretation. Source links do not guarantee that an answer is correct.

What gets saved in my research history?

With write access and the research skill, questions, answers, citations and attributed corrections can be saved privately to your account. The host must actually send that content. A failed save should be reported. Your AI provider also has its own data policies.
