Research in your AI conversation

Legal research for law students

TheLawyer helps law students bring source research into their existing AI study conversations. Ask for the original provisions behind an explanation, compare the wording with your notes and keep the distinction between evidence and your own argument.

Build understanding from the wording

Start with the issue and the relevant jurisdiction. Ask your assistant to retrieve the passages it relies on before it explains them. Read those passages yourself and identify the conditions, exceptions and definitions. A useful follow-up is to ask which factual change would alter the analysis and which source supports that difference.

Turn corrections into a study trail

When a lecturer, tutor or lawyer corrects an interpretation, ask the research skill to record the original claim, the replacement and the supporting source. With write consent, that correction becomes part of your private research history. The attribution records who supplied the feedback; it does not automatically verify their credentials.

Plan a small number of focused questions

One question may require several searches and document retrievals. Define the issue narrowly, ask the assistant to show what it found, and stop when the evidence is sufficient for your study goal. Your account is personal. A study group can discuss the sources without sharing one account or its credentials.

A question to start with

Help me understand this problem without writing my assignment. Find the relevant original passages, ask me to identify the conditions and exceptions, then challenge my proposed interpretation with a concrete counterexample.

An example prompt for your connected assistant. Your assistant decides which tools to call; review the result and the original sources.

Connect your assistant

From question to checked sources

  1. 1

    Define the issue

State the jurisdiction, relevant date and facts. Ask the assistant to identify missing information before drawing a conclusion.

  2. 2

    Ask for the original text

Have the assistant search the indexed corpus, retrieve relevant passages and return source links. A missing result is a coverage gap to investigate.

  3. 3

    Review and keep the trail

Open the original sources, check their dates and compare the wording with the answer. With write consent, the research skill can save the question, answer and later corrections.

Questions about this workflow

Will TheLawyer write my assignment?

TheLawyer retrieves research material for your assistant. You choose the study workflow. For learning, ask for sources, explanations and challenges to your reasoning, then write and verify your own analysis under the rules of your course.

Does TheLawyer cover every legal source?

No. Research is limited to the sources and versions in the indexed corpus. Ask your assistant to identify missing coverage and distinguish retrieved text from its own interpretation. Source links do not guarantee that an answer is correct.

What gets saved in my research history?

With write access and the research skill, questions, answers, citations and attributed corrections can be saved privately to your account. The host must actually send that content. A failed save should be reported. Your AI provider also has its own data policies.
