Legal research in ChatGPT with TheLawyer

TheLawyer can supply legal research tools to ChatGPT through a custom remote MCP connection where your ChatGPT plan and workspace allow it. Your questions and follow-ups stay in ChatGPT; TheLawyer handles the requested source research.

Check access in your ChatGPT workspace

Custom app availability depends on your ChatGPT plan, workspace controls and permissions. Check OpenAI's current setup guidance before subscribing for this workflow. TheLawyer is an independent connector, and a TheLawyer account does not include or unlock a ChatGPT subscription or administrator permissions.

Connect your personal research account

Use the MCP address on the installation page and sign in to TheLawyer during authorisation. Read access permits source research. Write access is a separate decision for saving research history. After connecting, make sure the assistant actually invokes TheLawyer rather than answering entirely from its general knowledge.

Continue the same conversation

Ask a follow-up about an exception, a different date or an alternative interpretation. Request the additional original passage needed for that follow-up. ChatGPT writes the response from the returned material and the conversation context. Open each important source and compare its wording with the resulting answer.

A question to start with

Use TheLawyer for this question. Show the retrieved sources and exact passages before your conclusion. If the connector is unavailable, tell me rather than suggesting that you checked sources you could not retrieve.

An example prompt for your connected assistant. Your assistant decides which tools to call; review the result and the original sources.

Connect your assistant

From question to checked sources

  1. 1

    Define the issue

State the jurisdiction, relevant date and facts. Ask the assistant to identify missing information before drawing a conclusion.

  2. 2

    Ask for the original text

Have the assistant search the indexed corpus, retrieve relevant passages and return source links. A missing result is a coverage gap to investigate.

  3. 3

    Review and keep the trail

Open the original sources, check their dates and compare the wording with the answer. With write consent, the research skill can save the question, answer and later corrections.

Questions about this workflow

Is TheLawyer a separate ChatGPT subscription?

No. TheLawyer is an independent research service connected through MCP. Your ChatGPT access is provided separately by OpenAI. Check your host's current custom-connection support before choosing this setup.

Does TheLawyer cover every legal source?

No. Research is limited to the sources and versions in the indexed corpus. Ask your assistant to identify missing coverage and distinguish retrieved text from its own interpretation. Source links do not guarantee that an answer is correct.

What gets saved in my research history?

With write access and the research skill, questions, answers, citations and attributed corrections can be saved privately to your account. The host must actually send that content. A failed save should be reported. Your AI provider also has its own data policies.
