Research in your AI conversation

Legal research in Claude with TheLawyer

TheLawyer brings legal source research into Claude through a compatible remote MCP connection. You can also download the workflow plugin for a Claude client that supports plugins. These are two installation routes with different host requirements.

Choose the installation route that fits

For a remote connection, use Claude's custom connector setup and the MCP address from the installation page. For plugin-capable clients, the download packages research workflows and guidance. Check the client you use before installing: a plugin archive is not a substitute for adding a remote connector to a chat-only interface.

Authorise source research and history separately

Sign in with your personal TheLawyer account. Read consent allows source retrieval. Grant write consent only when you want supported workflows to save research records. The skill should report a failed save, rather than claiming the conversation has been preserved when the host did not send it.

Ask Claude to expose the evidence

Have Claude return original passages, version information and source links alongside its analysis. When you correct a statement, ask the workflow to record the prior claim, the replacement and your evidence. That history stays attributable to the research record, while Claude remains the host for the conversation.

A question to start with

Use TheLawyer to research this issue. State your assumptions, retrieve the original text and cite it. When I correct a claim, append the correction with its evidence to the research record if write access is available.

From question to checked sources

  1. 1

    Define the issue

State the jurisdiction, relevant date and facts. Ask the assistant to identify missing information before drawing a conclusion.

  2. 2

    Ask for the original text

Have the assistant search the indexed corpus, retrieve relevant passages and return source links. A missing result is a coverage gap to investigate.

  3. 3

    Review and keep the trail

Open the original sources, check their dates and compare the wording with the answer. With write consent, the research skill can save the question, answer and later corrections.

Questions about this workflow

Do I need both the connector and plugin?

Not necessarily. A compatible remote connector provides the research tools. The plugin packages workflows for clients that support them. Choose the route your Claude client offers, then verify that it can authenticate and retrieve a source.

Does TheLawyer cover every legal source?

No. Research is limited to the sources and versions in the indexed corpus. Ask your assistant to identify missing coverage and distinguish retrieved text from its own interpretation. Source links do not guarantee that an answer is correct.

What gets saved in my research history?

With write access and the research skill, questions, answers, citations and attributed corrections can be saved privately to your account. The host must actually send that content. A failed save should be reported. Your AI provider also has its own data policies.
