Research in your AI conversation
A legal research MCP for your AI tools
TheLawyer's remote MCP connector exposes authenticated legal research tools to compatible AI clients. MCP is the connection protocol; the assistant you choose interprets your question, calls the tools and explains the returned source material.

A shared research account across interfaces
The connector and CLI use the same personal account and research service. This lets an agent retrieve sources through a supported interface without reproducing a browser-based research workflow. The website remains the place to install, review connections and manage account and billing settings.
Let the assistant discover the available tools
The connector offers help, read and write entry points. Help describes the available commands; read retrieves material; write performs authorised changes such as saving findings. The current help output is the reference for capabilities. Do not assume that every client supports every permission or workflow in the same way.
Keep consent and usage explicit
OAuth connects the client to your account. Read and write scopes are separate. Account activity records research requests, while saved questions and answers are separate private research records. Published source-action rates apply when paid billing is enabled; one tool workflow can involve multiple billable source calls.
A question to start with
Inspect TheLawyer's help first. Use the supported read commands to retrieve sources for this issue. Ask for missing facts, and explain whether write permission is available before trying to save the research record.
An example prompt for your connected assistant. Your assistant decides which tools to call; review the result and the original sources.
Connect your assistantFrom question to checked sources
- 1
Define the issue
State the jurisdiction, relevant date and facts. Ask the assistant to identify missing information before drawing a conclusion.
- 2
Ask for the original text
Have the assistant search the indexed corpus, retrieve relevant passages and return source links. A missing result is a coverage gap to investigate.
- 3
Review and keep the trail
Open the original sources, check their dates and compare the wording with the answer. With write consent, the research skill can save the question, answer and later corrections.
Questions about this workflow
Can I use the CLI instead of MCP?
Yes. The CLI provides authenticated terminal access to the service. MCP makes tools available to a compatible AI host. Choose the interface that fits the workflow and review connected clients through your account settings.
Does TheLawyer cover every legal source?
No. Research is limited to the sources and versions in the indexed corpus. Ask your assistant to identify missing coverage and distinguish retrieved text from its own interpretation. Source links do not guarantee that an answer is correct.
What gets saved in my research history?
With write access and the research skill, questions, answers, citations and attributed corrections can be saved privately to your account. The host must actually send that content. A failed save should be reported. Your AI provider also has its own data policies.
